Salina Weigman achieved one of the most ridiculous trophy hauls in the world of football, leading the Netherlands in 2017 before winning the third European Championship that led the Lioness to her glory in 2021 and 2025.
Salina Wigman could only conclude that “football is chaos” after her English team’s dramatic Euro 2025 victory. The Lioness officially led the entire Swiss knockout phase by just over a minute, but that wasn’t a problem as it came from delays from time to time.
“I can’t believe it, but I have a medal on my neck and a trophy,” Wigman said. “It was the most chaotic tournament on the pitch, and all the challenges we had on the pitch against our opponents.
“It was a mess from the first game. It’s incredible to lose the first game and become a European champion. Football is a mess.”
After losing an opener against France, England needed a victory over the Netherlands and Wales to reach the knockout stage. So they beat Sweden on a penalty and extended Italy to come from behind. The final against Spain was also a penalty after Lioness star Alesia Russo canceled Mariona Caldentie’s opening game.
And Wigman welcomed the collective spirit on her part as goalkeeper Hannah Hampton saved two Spanish penalties before Chloe Kelly scored a decisive spot kick.

“I can’t believe it. The word ‘team’ really explained who we are. “We said we can win any measure, and that’s what we’ve shown again today. I’m so proud of our team and staff. It’s incredible.”
It was Spain that faced England in the 2023 World Cup final, but Wigman’s team won a revenge at St. Jacob Park, and after a 2022 victory over England and a Dutch success in 2017, it was the third consecutive euro for manager Wigman.

England hero Hampton was very caught up in the moment when Kelly’s penalty had to check on the fans to win.
“When Chloe steps up, I try to turn to the fans and try to imitate the kick and ask if we’ll win. I’ve lost the track completely,” she said.
“They were just cheering for me, so I didn’t know what the answer was, but I saw it running. That’s what we won. I can’t believe it.”
