Tom Brady showed his nonsense leadership style in tense moments as he became despicable with his employees on the topic of what gifts to give for David Beckham.
The scene was captured in Amazon Prime Video Docusary, built in Birmingham: Brady & the Blues, and follows his second year as a minority owner in Birmingham City, returning to the championship after the relegation of the previous season.
In the second episode, the seven-time Super Bowl champions lose patience with the football club’s staff members before a high-profile match against Wrexham, who was competing for promotion in September.
Some UK media reports have revealed that there is no formal link to Birmingham, and disagreements have been unfolded about whether Beckham should receive the club’s gift bag. He was present as Tom’s personal guest.
Staff reportedly suggested that providing Manchester United legends with club merchandise, such as hoodies, scarves and hats, was inappropriate. Brady’s response was instantly poignant.
“That’s stupid,” Brady snapped. “Give him a gift bag and take it home, which is sweet.
“He doesn’t have to wear it.”
Before the explosion, the former New England patriot star was already discussing the idea with his co-owner Tom Wagner.
Despite these struggles, Birmingham rebounded spectacularly, with Ryan Reynold’s Wrexham team finishing second with 111 points, recording automatic promotions and League One title.
Birmingham’s success comes after a combination of 25 million investments, which are more aggressive than the rest of the sector, without considering wages or contracts.
Brady questions Rooney’s leadership skills
Not only does the docusary capture lighter moments and behind-the-scenes access, but it also reveals the difficult truths Brady encountered in his first year in British football.
Among them was the unfortunate appointment of legendary football star Wayne Rooney as Birmingham manager, brought in early in the 2023-24 season.
He is known for scoring 364 career goals, becoming Manchester United’s all-time top scorer, winning 16 career trophies and captaining the England national team.
Then, sixth at the table when he arrived, their fate transformed dramatically, winning only two of the 15 games. It was very similar to the situation in which Birmingham also found himself 10 years ago almost ten years ago.
He was fired just 83 days later, and Birmingham ultimately suffered relegation. Brady later reflected the misstep and expressed concerns that it had emerged shortly after Rooney was in charge.
“Well, at different times, you always want to give people the opportunity to succeed,” Brady said in the series. “I have so much respect for Wayne and what he accomplished.
“He’s one of the greatest players ever on the field. At the same time, I have very high expectations of what leadership looks like.”
Brady later added in addition to Talksport only.
“I think there will be a lot of people this summer because we have to change all the people associated with losses.”
