jAs I’ve done recently with Club World Cup, Leagues Cup will be the new format for the 2025 edition.
Since the first edition was held in 2019, the League Cup has constantly evolved to improve the view and competitiveness between the La Liga MX and MLS in this tournament.

The duel between Liga MX and MLS will be even more intense as they try to win a team in this edition of the League Cup. Now you can enjoy more games between the leagues with changes in distribution and format. Here we will tell you all new things about the tournament and the clubs participating in this edition.

Participating teams from the 2025 Leagues Cup
One of the most important changes to this edition of Leagues Cup is the number of teams participating. When this tournament was first played, it was only eight teams, but in 2025 the tournament will win the presence of 36 clubs (18 from Riga MX and 18 from MLS).
In this case, all teams from Liga MX were considered, but in MLS, clubs qualifying for the MLS Cup playoffs were selected to compete in this edition of the League Cup.
The 2023 and 2024 editions of the League Cup were included to have a total of 47 clubs (San Diego was not present), when both leagues had to be suspended for a month while the tournament was taking place.
New League Cup Format for 2025
On this occasion, the League Cup will have different formats to have more matches between the La Liga MX and MLS, in addition to reducing the number of teams, preventing them from being eliminated between teams in the same league.
Each team plays three games with rivals from other leagues, and points are earned in two tables, East and West (3 for victory, two in penalties, one in losses in penalties).
The four best teams from each meeting then advance to the next round, where the club is redistributed to play as many matches as possible between the La Liga MX and MLS teams.
The League Cup will begin on July 29th and end on August 31st, but another change is not to stop both leagues completely, as it took place in the week after the knockout stage (quarter-finals).
