Mikel Arteta led Arsenal to their first Premier League title in 22 years and the Champions League final, but he has just one year left on his contract at the Emirates Stadium.
Manager Josh Kroenke has promised that signing Mikel Arteta to a new contract is his “top priority”.
Arsenal co-chairman Kroenke insists Arteta is fully committed to the club and claims talks have begun for a new two-year extension to reward the Gunners manager following their title win. The Gunners could complete an unprecedented double as they prepare to face Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final in Budapest on Saturday.
Arteta is set to receive a significant increase from his current £5m-a-year deal, which expires in 2027, as the bosses are determined to keep the manager and lead them into a new era of success.
Kroenke, who is celebrating the club’s first title in 22 years, said: “If there is one singular person who can trace all this back, I will give 100 per cent credit to Mikel, his staff and the players. They are them.”
“As much as Mikel is setting up our tactics, the players have to go out there and try to win for you.

“Retaining Mikel is a top priority and I think the good news for Arsenal fans around the world is that he’s enjoyed this project, he’s enjoyed being here and he’s been an Arsenal man through and through, from his time as a player to now.”
Kroenke believes Arsenal have a strong chance of winning their first Champions League title and insists he is ready to back Arteta in the summer transfer window.
They spent £250m last year, but Arteta has spent nearly £1bn in six-and-a-half years in charge and is ready to fight again regardless of what happens in the final – even though a win could help them land a top target like Atletico Madrid’s Julián Alvarez.
Kroenke added: “The Champions League is more open, but the Premier League is top-to-bottom. It’s amazing. I’m very proud, especially after so many years of playing so close.”
“I hope this is a good message to send to boys and girls around the world: Sometimes you have to fail to succeed, and even if you don’t reach your goals, keep trying.
“We’ve had some conversations about different things and how it’s starting to take shape. But I think it’s a good push and a great question.
“And maybe some opportunities will come out of this success that we’re not aware of. But win or lose, I think our plan was the plan. And we were going to continue with it, even if the results weren’t what we wanted.”
