Liverpool ended a poor season with a draw against Brentford at Anfield as Arne Slott’s status was questioned by former players
Former Liverpool star Jermaine Pennant has claimed that the Reds’ draw with Brentford on the final day should be the “nail in the coffin” for Arne Slott following his recent below-average performances.
The Merseysiders were champions this time last year and won comfortably in the Dutchman’s debut year. However, they have endured a sharp drop-off in their second season, despite returning more than £400 million in revenue last summer.
Liverpool’s season has been somewhat hampered by injuries to key players, but the level of performance and glaring issues persist and have plagued the team in the slot all season.
A strong start to the season quickly fizzled out, and Slott faced questions about his future. Liverpool could have only finished fifth with a draw with Brentford on the final day, but Pennant insists the leaders must wake up and make difficult decisions.

He said on social media: “The board can’t sit in the manager’s box and watch this rubbish. The board will think, discuss and come to the conclusion that this manager will challenge for silver next season!!! Hold on to Brentford. This should put the nail in the coffin.”
He continued: “FSG, read on… 18 games home and away against the top 9 teams. Liverpool have won 3… Yes, I said 3… do what’s right for the club and the players!!!! Because your eyes are seeing the exact same thing that we all are seeing. And it’s scary.”
The draw with Brentford comes after a heartbreaking defeat at Aston Villa nine days earlier. The Reds were down 4-2 and went ahead in stoppage time, but the performance highlighted problems that had existed in Slot’s team for much of the season.
Slott recently claimed he expects to remain in the job next season. Xabi Alonso was seen as a strong candidate to replace Liverpool should they choose to leave, but he is no longer on the market after moving to Chelsea.
The Dutchman was attempting to transition the team this season, signing with a different player profile than under Jurgen Klopp. Although Mohamed Salah’s influence has waned this term, it will be a high-profile departure.
Slott is under pressure to make the deals of Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz work at Anfield given their huge fees.
