RABAT, Morocco (AP) – Mamelodi Sundowns defeated FAR Rabat 2-1 on aggregate on Sunday to win their second African Champions League title after a 1-1 draw in the second leg of the final.
The South African team, nicknamed the “Brazilians” because of the color of their uniforms, last won the trophy in 2016, but lost in the final last year to Egyptian team Pyramid FC.
Sundowns entered Sunday’s match at the Moulay Abdellah Stadium with a 1-0 advantage in the first leg, but hosts FAR equalized just before half-time when Mohamed Hulimat converted a penalty after Reda Slim was brought down by Divine Lunga.
Sundowns hit back just before half-time when Teboho Mokoena’s shot hit the underside of the crossbar.
In the 74th minute, Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams committed a foul on Youssef El Fali, resulting in FAR being awarded an additional penalty. However, Williams recovered by saving Frimato’s penalty.
The Moroccan side has won the African Champions League once in its history, in 1985.
