FLance has never been short on generational talent. From Thierry Henry to Zinedine Zidane, Karim Benzema to Kylian Mbapp, the production line continues to rumble.

But the next breakout star may already be here — and he’s only 19 years old. Electric forward Eli Junior Crupi is being hailed across Europe as the next Mbapp after bursting through the defense of France’s Under-21s and impressing in his early stint with AFC Bournemouth.
Some scouts whisper that he has Mbapp’s explosiveness and Sergio Ajello’s finishing ability. For the rest of the world, that’s a frightening prospect.

A rising star that comes in handy when it matters
On Thursday night, Crupi once again reminded everyone why he is France’s most exciting young attacker. He came off the bench when France were leading 1-0 in a Euro U-21 qualifier against Switzerland and instantly changed the game. A sharp counterattack. It’s the perfect touch. One clinical strike from 18 yards into the bottom corner.

A 1-1 draw was confirmed. There was another statement. France are fourth in their qualifying group but have played just three games, fewer than any other team. And each time Crupi touches the field, the road to the tournament looks a little brighter.
Anyone who has followed Crupi’s journey will not be surprised by his rapid rise. He scored his first professional goal away against Nantes and became the youngest player to score twice in Ligue 1 since 1974 in a thrilling 3-3 draw against Lyon. By the time Bournemouth came knocking, half of Europe was already aware.
Last season alone, he scored 22 goals in Ligue 2 for Lorient, fueling their promotion campaign and attracting interest from Tottenham, RB Leipzig, Real Madrid and West Ham. Somehow Bournemouth managed to secure his signature for just 10 million plus add-ons. This is one of the Premier League’s most impressive coups in recent memory.
Bournemouth saw something special
Club executives couldn’t hide their excitement. Technical director Simon Francis said: “Junior is a perfect fit for the club’s model.” “He has shown a high level of natural technical ability and awareness…The speed with which he has adapted to senior football is very encouraging.”
President of Football Operations Tiago Pinto added: “We are particularly pleased to have signed him, given the huge interest we are receiving across Europe.” Crupi agreed to join the Cherries in February 2025, but part of his contract left him with a further six months on loan at Lorient. That extra time has paid off, and he’s come back more refined, more confident, and more dangerous.
Once he finally made his first Premier League start in mid-October, he never looked back. With four goals in his first three starts, it became clear that the player wasn’t just talented, he was ready. Crupi has represented France at all youth levels: U-16, U-17, U-18, U-19 and now U-21. He played 90 minutes in last summer’s U-19 Euro final, a heartbreaking loss to Spain, but it was a match that proved his stature as one of the team’s driving forces.
Currently, he is the catalyst for the France U-21 national team as they aim to qualify. And the timing is perfect, as the top national team is in a period of transition after the prime years of Mbapp, Ousmane Demble and Antoine Griezmann.
