Arsenal have the chance to send a statement to their biggest rivals by signing Vinicius Junior from Real Madrid

05:30, July 28, 2026Updated July 28, 2026 11:51

Tuesday’s transfer news: Premier League gossip

The Gunners now have the chance to build their own Galacticos squad after reports emerged over the weekend that Arsenal had expressed concrete interest in Real Madrid talisman Vinicius Junior.

Arsenal fans around the world stopped their act and took notice after news broke at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday that the Brazilian’s contract had been approved at all levels. Gunners bosses, who were looking to sign a big left-winger this summer, have found a golden market opportunity after disappointingly missing out on signing Morgan Rodgers.

Vinicius has only one year left on his contract, but he has yet to reach an agreement with Los Blancos over a new contract. Real do not want to lose the Brazilian sensation on a free transfer next summer, and there is a good chance that both they and Vinicius will be lured into Arsenal’s pursuit.

There are no formal negotiations taking place between the clubs or the player’s representatives at this time, and Arsenal are monitoring the situation closely before deciding whether to make a formal bid. Given his superstar status, Arsenal will need to make the 26-year-old their top earner with a massive £400,000-a-week deal to woo him, which would mean he would overtake Bukayo Saka and break the club’s current wage structure.

Vinicius Junior of Real Madrid CF and Arsenal FC manager Mikel Arteta greet each other at the end of the match between Real Madrid CF and Arsenal FC during the UEFA Champions League 2024/25 quarter-final second leg match held at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu in Madrid, Spain on April 16, 2025.

However, the Gunners are shrewd and well-managed financially, so this is one player they should be willing to spend generously on. In a transfer market where top wingers such as Rodgers, Bradley Barcora and Yan Diomande have been snapped up for more than £100m, Vinicius stands above any other player in terms of quality and track record.

The Brazilian played a key role in the world’s best club winning the Champions League twice, but was unlucky not to win the Ballon d’Or in 2024. Arsenal need to find a way to sign him to their biggest ever contract. It would be a chilling move not only for the Premier League club but also for their European rivals.

Vinicius’ arrival will give manager Mikel Arteta the game-changing ability he sorely needed at the top level, but most notably after losing to PSG in the Champions League final in May, individual moments of magic were missing. The Brazilian has proven time and time again that he has those moments in his locker.

The official Premium Experience is now available for the Premier League 26/27 season. It’s easier than ever to transform ordinary fixtures into something truly unforgettable.

Signing him would even reverse Mesut Ozil’s shock move from the Bernabéu to N5 in 2013, but he is now a much more attractive proposition given that Arsenal are finally Premier League champions after 22 years.

Vinicius immediately started the season on the left wing, with new signings Christos Tzoris and Gabriel Martinelli providing valuable depth in what is expected to be a long season spanning four competitions.

Fortunately for Arteta, the right flank, by contrast, doesn’t need to react immediately. Bukayo Saka has been slowly returning to full fitness despite being plagued by injuries over the past two seasons. Noni Madueke and wonderkid Max Dauman are expected to share minutes on the right side when Talisman is unavailable or rested.

In that case, the only thing you have to be careful about is the striker’s position. Viktor Gökeres led the line for much of last season, but the Swede, who arrived in a £64m deal last summer, was unable to contribute much in the game apart from impressive finishing.

Atlético player Julian Alvarez (19 years old) celebrates after scoring a 0-1 goal in the UEFA Champions League 2025/26 League Knockout Playoff first leg match between Club Brugge KV and Atlético Madrid held at the Jan Breiderstadion in Brugge, Belgium on February 18, 2026.

Kai Havertz is clearly Arteta’s favorite and has repeatedly proven his worth since his controversial move from Chelsea in 2023. While he is a big name and fits perfectly into Arsenal’s system, the German’s repeated injury problems are a cause for concern.

And if you compare this pair to Julian Alvarez in terms of pure ability, there is no competition at all. Unlike Vinicius, who has only recently emerged as a possibility, Atletico Madrid’s Alvarez is a long-term target for the north Londoners.

According to widespread reports, the Argentine is Arteta’s dream forward, adept at linking plays and opportunities with his goal-scoring instincts. The biggest factor preventing the player from moving to the Emirates Stadium so far has been his well-known desire to join Barcelona this summer.

However, Atlético have refused to sell Alvarez to a direct rival, leaving the door open for the Premier League champions. Spanish outlet Cadena SER claim that an offer of more than £51.7m for Goqueres, Arsenal’s top scorer last season, will be seriously considered by Atletico.

MADRID, SPAIN - APRIL 29: Arsenal's Victor Goqueres, Declan Rice and Piero Hincapi try to stop Atletico Madrid's Julián Álvarez from taking a free kick during the UEFA Champions League 2025/26 semi-final first leg match between Atlético de Madrid and Arsenal FC on April 29, 2026 at the Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid, Spain.

Such a deal would prove a masterpiece, albeit a callous one, on the part of sporting director Andrea Berta, who admitted he made a mistake when signing Gokeres from Sporting CP. Berta also has the added bonus of knowing Alvarez’s situation inside out, having been the one who orchestrated his move from Manchester City to Atletico before moving to north London.

Like Vinicius, Alvarez is only 26 years old and has his best years ahead of him. His return to the Premier League, coupled with the arrival of the Brazilian, will give Arteta a front three similar to the Galacticos’ golden era.

Arsenal are already in the enviable position of having the best defense in world football. Now they have the opportunity to match the same level of attacking quality with two forwards in what will be Europe’s most feared and complete team.
