Manchester United could be forced to pay a hefty transfer fee for midfielder Aurelien Choameni after it was revealed that he has agreed a three-year contract extension with Real Madrid. Los Blancos have tied the Frenchman to a long-term deal in light of Manchester City star Rodri’s absence.
However, this puts them in a better position in transfer negotiations. According to the National, the La Liga giants have improved Choameny’s salary to avoid losing him on the cheap or on a free transfer.
It is also said that if Real Madrid want to spend big on Jose Mourinho, they will have to make a significant sale. And there are reports that the Spanish side believe Rodri is available, potentially opening the door for Choameni to leave.
United carried out a background check on Choameni several months ago and are thought to be keen to sign him if he becomes available. But first they need help from local rivals Manchester City. Enzo Maresca’s side still do not want to part ways with the Ballon d’Or candidate.
That remains the case, but there is uncertainty surrounding Mourinho’s midfield plans and Choameni’s future. United manager Michael Carrick has already added two central midfielders to his squad this summer. Andrej Santos and Youri Tielemans join a group that already features Koby Mainu, along with more attack-oriented options in Bruno Fernandes and Mason Mount.
“We got some good signs from Andrei in the first game. He’s getting the rhythm and feel again, so it was good to see him in the red shirt,” Carrick explained after the Brazilian’s pre-season game against Wrexham.
City manager Enzo Maresca said Rodri was “coming back to us” and said he was not concerned about transfer speculation surrounding the star midfielder. The World Cup winner has been presented with new terms by the club ahead of his contract expiring next summer.
Following the departure of Bernardo Silva, City have already signed Elliott Anderson for £116m and are also interested in Lille star Ayyoub Bouadi. How that will affect Rodri’s future remains to be seen.
Vinicius Junior’s move to Arsenal could thwart Choameni’s pursuit. Real Madrid are yet to finalize a new contract for the winger, but Los Blancos may not need to make a second big sale to generate cash, as the Gunners are willing to make a big offer to sign him.
United also include Roma and France midfielder Manu Corn, Bournemouth star Alex Scott and Brighton’s Alex Scott.
