Harry Kane was one of the favorites to win the Ballon d’Or after a fantastic season at Bayern Munich, but the England captain has been warned he will miss out on the award.
Harry Kane is said to be out of the running for the Ballon d’Or after England failed to win the World Cup. The Bayern Munich captain has been named one of the favorites for the award after an excellent season in Germany.
Kane, 32, played in 51 games and scored 61 goals, helping Bayern to win the Bundesliga and the German Cup. However, he was unable to win his first Champions League title, and the German team could barely reach the semi-finals.
Meanwhile, striker Kane, who scored six goals in seven games in the World Cup, endured further heartache as England were eliminated in the semi-finals.
And former Arsenal and Chelsea star Emmanuel Petit warned Kane that failing to win either competition could cost him his chances of winning the Ballon d’Or.
The Frenchman told Mr Gamble: “Harry Kane’s chances of winning the Ballon d’Or are over. If you judge it only based on the German league, it’s fine, it’s perfectly fine.”
“But I think he disappeared when it started to become really difficult to win in the Champions League and with the national team.
“I can’t blame him because he gave his all and scored a lot of goals, but he didn’t make an impact in important games like the Champions League. So I think there are some names ahead of him.”
Petit believes Kane is no longer a candidate for the Ballon d’Or, but suggests several of Spain’s stars could definitely be in the running after their success at the World Cup.
He added: “Yamal? He had a great World Cup. You know the Ballon d’Or rules have changed a lot, just like the rules on the pitch. Rodri was the best player in this tournament as well. Messi had a great tournament but he’s playing in Miami.”
“I know that the World Cup comes before any title for the club, but in the meantime we have to win the title. Will it be a Spaniard? I don’t know. But it will be tough. And in the end I hope it won’t be a commercial decision.”
Kane is currently on vacation after completing international duty, but is expected to begin negotiations on a new contract with the German giants once he returns to Bayern Munich.
