Marcus Rashford is still on the fence for the 2026/27 season, with his dreams of joining Barcelona extinguished and Manchester United’s attitude causing problems.

Marcus Rashford is currently on holiday, presumably relaxing and recuperating after a long season that ended in disappointment against England at the World Cup. However, given the current situation, he may be finding it difficult to enjoy himself.

Rashford had a fantastic 2025/26 season. He couldn’t have done better during his dream loan spell with Barcelona, scoring 14 goals and providing 14 assists in 49 appearances. He finished the season in Thomas Tuchel’s World Cup squad.

A few months later, his desired destination in club football did not materialize as the Three Lions were forced to settle for third place. Rather than triggering the £26m option to sign him permanently, Barcelona opted to shell out £69m on Anthony Gordon and then spend £18.7m on Karim Adeyemi to strengthen their stance to deal another blow to United.

Rashford’s chances of joining Barça are now certainly over, with the most likely outcome at the moment being a return to United, the club he thought he had bid farewell to. Rashford still has two years left on his contract with his boyhood club and holds the key to resolving the frustrating situation.

United wanted to cash in on their chips and believed his excellent season at Barça would make that easy. However, the Catalan side’s attempts to negotiate a new loan deal in exchange for paying the agreed £26m clause angered United bosses and ultimately led to them burning their bridges.

Another big issue is Rashford’s wages. He signed a lucrative five-year contract in July 2023 and is paid £325,000 a week by United. These conditions effectively hold Rashford back, making him a player that no other club can sign.

The 28-year-old joined Barcelona prepared to take a huge pay cut, but things didn’t work out for him. Now, if he’s going to escape United this summer, he needs to get the club to play ball.

The only team that realistically has the financial power to sign Rashford is the Premier League. The i reports that Tottenham, Chelsea and Arsenal are eyeing him, but United are currently reluctant to do business with their league rivals.

His success at Barcelona last season was received positively, but the idea that the academy graduate would mess it up in the Premier League has proven to be a strong deterrent against his sale.

United strengthened their midfield this summer with the signings of Youri Tielemans and Andrej Santos, and secured funding with the sale of Rasmus Hojlund and the departures of Casemiro and Jadon Sancho. But Rashford remains the biggest piece of the jigsaw that has yet to find a home.

Michael Carrick has a good relationship with Rashford and it is understood that Rashford harbors no ill will toward the club now that Ruben Amorim has long left. He is currently scheduled to join the United squad for a training camp in Ireland in early August.

For that to change, Rashford will require a major change of heart at United’s top brass.
