Lionel Messi’s wife has made her feelings clear after Argentina’s loss to Spain in the World Cup final was widely criticized. Last weekend, the two countries faced off for the biggest prize in soccer, with Argentina aiming for back-to-back titles and Spain chasing its second star. In the end, an extra-time winner courtesy of Ferran Torres saw La Roja lift the iconic golden trophy.
Immediately after the final whistle, Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes became enraged by attacking the Spanish players as they drove away to celebrate. The majority of the team turned their backs when the trophy was handed to their rivals, an act widely interpreted as a sign of disrespect. At the beginning of the tournament, Argentina celebrated their semi-final victory over England by holding up a banner mentioning the Falkland Islands, which was highly controversial.
These incidents, and their aggressive style of play throughout the World Cup, led to widespread criticism of Argentina following their loss to Spain.
Messi’s wife Antonella also made her feelings known by reposting a message from author and media celebrity Connie Ansaldi.
It read: “We are proud to be Argentinians. Argentina is truly like a family. We disagree and sometimes fight, but if someone from outside comes and insults us, we will tear out their liver.”
Antonelli also paid tribute to her husband in an emotional post on Instagram after the World Cup.
