It has been officially announced that Jurgen Klopp will become the new manager of the German national team on a four-year contract. The former Liverpool manager will leave his current role at Red Bull to replace Julian Nagelsmann, who resigned following the World Cup defeat.

Shortly after Nagelsmann resigned and terms were agreed earlier this month, Klopp was seen as a top target. The 59-year-old will now return to the dugout, having worked as Red Bull’s global head of football for the past 19 months since leaving Liverpool in 2024.

Germany were eliminated from the World Cup by Paraguay in the last 32, leaving Nagelsmann with no choice but to resign from the position he had held since replacing Hansi Flick in September 2023.

Klopp, who previously managed Mainz, Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool, was in North America following Die Mannschaft as a German TV pundit, where he criticized their approach. He left Liverpool at the end of the 2023/24 season due to fatigue, but said earlier this month he felt “recharged”.

“It’s a great honor to be here. The last few days have always felt like a movie was happening to me,” Klopp said at a press conference on Friday.

“I’ve always known that the job of coach of the German national team was a big one, but now I really understand what it is. Given where I come from, I never imagined this job would be for me. I think the time has now come and I’m grateful to everyone involved. Ideally, it’s a path we all go down together.”

It was also announced on Friday that Per Mertesacker will succeed Andreas Rettig as sporting director of the German Football Association. The former Germany defender will leave his role in Arsenal’s youth structure and take up his new job in January 2027.

Klopp had a hugely successful nine years at Liverpool, winning the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and two League Cups. He is also highly regarded in Germany, where he led Dortmund to two Bundesliga titles and the Champions League final.

The move had been expected for some time, ever since Klopp, who worked on the World Cup for the German broadcaster, publicly acknowledged the talks in early July. “Yes, I can confirm the negotiations,” Klopp told Magenta. “Things have moved on quite quickly. Julian has resigned. The DFB is looking for a replacement and is in discussions with me.”

“What needs to happen now? It’s time. I have a contract with Red Bull. I have said that I am interested in negotiations. This is not just a Julian Nagelsmann issue, so the negotiations will be intensive.”

“I have an existing contract with Red Bull. I have said many times how much I enjoy this job. As an individual, I usually respect the contract. But I have also made it clear that I am interested in negotiations with the DFB.”
