Argentina’s President Javier Millay has slammed his country’s “jealous” critics following embarrassing scenes at the World Cup. The runners-up have caused a lot of anger in recent weeks, drawing criticism for their aggressive style of play and repeated antics throughout the tournament. After defeating England in the semi-finals, many players caused controversy by holding up political banners referencing the Falkland Islands.

Immediately after the World Cup final, Leandro Paredes was embroiled in further drama when he attacked several Spanish players celebrating their victory. When La Roja lifted the iconic golden trophy, the majority of Argentina’s national team also turned away.

Millais has finally responded to growing criticism of his country on social media, defending his national team in a series of Instagram posts.

One post read: “Do we have an enemy? That means we have defended something before. We will defend Argentina.”

Another said: “The problem with Argentina is that we stand out. We don’t go unnoticed, people are jealous of us, and we’re good at almost everything.”

This came after Paredes admitted Spain deserved victory and dismissed conspiracy theories surrounding Argentina.

“Spain were stronger than us in the final. They deserved to win the World Cup,” said the midfielder, who is yet to apologize for his dishonorable actions after the full-time whistle.

“We don’t pay attention to these theories. If I believed everything I hear, I would lose my mind. A lot was said before, during and after the World Cup.”

Reflecting on Argentina’s appearance in the final, Paredes said his team had played a great tournament, noting the achievements of recent years, including two Copa America titles and the 2022 World Cup trophy.

He described it as an “extraordinary journey”, adding: “Perhaps in time we will realize the greatness of what we have achieved, because it is incredible.”
