Matheus Fernandes was linked with a move to Manchester United this summer, but the former West Ham man opted for a move to Spurs instead, starting his career in style in north London.

Matheus Fernandes achieved great success in his Tottenham career, scoring a stunning goal on his debut. The Portuguese midfielder completed an £85m move to north London from relegated West Ham last month.
Fernandes, 22, was also linked with a move to Manchester United, but the Red Devils were not willing to pay the amount the Hammers demanded for his services.
Instead, they paid a combined £85m for Aston Villa and Chelsea’s Youri Tielemans and Andrej Santos. And while United will look back on their business positively, they may have a little regret if Fernandes’ pre-season goals at Spurs are anything to go by.
Roberto De Zerbi’s side faced MK Dons in their opening pre-season game on Wednesday, with Fernandes scoring a stunning volley from outside the box.
The midfielder said of his goal: “It was amazing, wasn’t it? The moment I scored the goal, I thought I couldn’t take another shot because if I missed, I would be called lucky.”
“It gave me confidence for the next game, for the next few days. The most important thing is to play well and control the game. I was very tired in the last minutes, so I need to improve on this too, but it is very important for me to play well.”
“This was my favorite goal of my career. It was amazing. I was first in miles and second last season. I need to do this more often to score goals and take shots outside the box. This will give me confidence going forward because I know I can do it.”

Regarding preparations for the 2026/27 season, Fernandes added: “The weather in England is very nice and it’s not too tough. I think it’s important to talk to the manager and the players. They’re all doing great.”
“I’m very happy to be here. I know I’m playing for a huge club. We’re playing for the top of the Premier League, so the level has to be high. We need to train hard to be able to play and compete with our opponents.”
Asked what he wants to achieve during his time at Spurs, Fernandes said: “Personally, I want to do better than last season. I know I need to score more goals and get more assists like I did today. Just work on my game more consistently.”
“Playing for Tottenham, the pressure might be even more. I need to get better in many aspects and that’s why I’m here. I know that Mr. de Zerbi will help me and the team grow. And now it’s just us competing against the world.”
