Bruno Guimarães has emerged as Arsenal’s top target for quality reinforcements this summer, with Arsenal prepared to pay £70m for him.

Arsenal are preparing to make a £70m bid for Bruno Guimarães, but they have no intention of paying too much for the midfielder even if Newcastle try to resist a sale.

The Gunners are in the market for quality additions to strengthen the squad that won the Premier League last season and reached the Champions League final. And the move of Guimarães, who has a wealth of experience at the top level, would be attractive in the search for an elite midfielder.

Guimarães, 28, is known to be keen on the move, which would give him a realistic chance of winning a major trophy.

But Newcastle are unwilling to cash in on their talismanic captain, and it remains to be seen whether a financial package of around £70m will realistically be enough to soften that stance.

BBC Sport has reported that Arsenal are prepared to make a formal bid of the same amount for Guimarães after increasing their interest in him. However, it is noteworthy that they do not deviate from their assessment of the Brazilian.

It remains to be seen whether they will consider a higher bid for the player who turns 29 later this year. And if they do, they may choose to move on to other targets.

That attitude led to Arsenal missing out on signing long-term target Morgan Rodgers, who was seen as a ceiling-high signing as they searched for a new left-sided attacker.

The Gunners value Rodgers at £80m. This figure is far lower than the rating Aston Villa gave their England star. This gap in valuations opened the door for Chelsea to swoop in with a £117m offer. Arsenal refused to counter that and Rodgers ended up joining one of their big domestic rivals.

Rodgers’ former Aston Villa teammate Ezri Konsa is another player Arsenal are courting ahead of the new Premier League season, which is just weeks away.
