Argentina will be forced to change their kit following their controversial loss to Spain in the World Cup final. Lionel Messi and his team fell short against New Jersey with brutal, passive tactics and ultimately lost on a Ferran Torres goal in overtime.

Argentina were seeking their fourth win in the competition’s history since Messi finally lifted the trophy in Qatar four years ago. Since becoming world champions, their uniforms have included a golden emblem featuring the outline of the trophy and the words “FIFA World Champions 2022”. However, given that they are no longer World Cup holders, that proud addition to their legendary color scheme will need to be removed, as Spain are set to adopt the coveted gold badge for the next four years.

It also means they will have to wait at least four more years before they can add a fourth World Cup star to their kit. Argentina can still wear a badge celebrating their Copa America victory in 2024.

They will defend that trophy in 2028, two years before the next World Cup, to be held primarily in Spain, Portugal and Morocco. To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the World Cup, special opening single matches will be held in Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay.

Argentina did not give up their trophies and gold badges gracefully. After the final whistle, midfielder Leandro Paredes appeared to throw a punch at members of the Spain squad celebrating on the pitch.

The South Americans were once again criticized for their physical approach during their semi-final win over England, with Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandes sent off for two offenses.

FIFA said in a statement: “Following the evaluation of the relevant match report for the FIFA World Cup Final between Spain and Argentina, pursuant to Article 36 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code (FDC), the FIFA Disciplinary Commission has appointed a Disciplinary and Ethics Prosecutor to investigate possible violations of the FDC in relation to the post-match incident. Further details will be announced as soon as they are announced by the FIFA Disciplinary Commission.” The prosecutor’s report has been completed. ”

Paredes was thought to have been sent off for his actions at the end of the match, but it turned out that he was not shown a red card. Any suspension or sanction against him would therefore result from a retrospective investigation that could be initiated by the FIFA Disciplinary Committee.
