Billionaire Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has been approached to buy Premier League giants Liverpool and is said to have entered into negotiations.

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has been approached to join a consortium in talks to buy a stake in Liverpool FC. The billionaire, who has an estimated net worth of $259bn (£193bn), has been in talks to join a syndicate of investors led by British-Indian businessman Amit Bhatia.

The Reds’ current owner, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), confirmed that a group had approached Mr. Bhatia about buying a stake in the club. The talks are understood to be seen as similar to the agreement with Dynasty Equity in 2023, which made a strategic minority investment worth between £82m and £164m in Liverpool.

Andoni Iraola faces a crucial summer as the 20-time champions look to right the wrongs of last season’s failed title defense.

News of the investment talks comes at a time of uncertainty for football clubs due to turmoil at senior level, with FSG’s CEO of football Michael Edwards leaving the club, while the deal is strongly linked with Liverpool’s sporting director Richard Hughes’ move to Saudi Arabia.

Jeff Bezos’ approach

Bhatia, the son-in-law of billionaire steel tycoon Lakshmi Mittal, is said to have held talks with the Amazon founder, according to Sky News. However, sources reportedly warned that Bezos was unsure whether he would go ahead with the investment in the Premier League club.

Bezos is one of the richest people in the world, with Forbes magazine estimating his wealth at $257 billion, making him the fourth richest person in the world. The 62-year-old had previously considered bids from the Seattle Seahawks and Washington Commanders in the sports world, including the NFL, but was unable to move forward with either contract.

The Premier League has seen an influx of American involvement, with half of its 20 teams owned by investors primarily based in the United States. Negotiations are ongoing between Bhatia’s consortium and FSG. FSG also owns Major League Baseball giants the Boston Red Sox and has been Liverpool’s custodian since 2010 after saving the club from administration under American owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett.

FSG statement

Sky News reported that Mr Bhatia’s consortium could take up to a 30% stake in the football club. The Anglo-Indian’s decision to leave QPR paved the way for him to acquire a stake in Liverpool.

The Reds’ owner is open to new investment, whether it be a minority stake or a full sale, starting in 2022, with Dynasty Equity taking a 4% stake a year later. In a statement, FSG confirmed discussions with an investment consortium led by the entrepreneur.

“An investment consortium led, managed and represented by Amit Bhatia has expressed interest in making a strategic minority investment in Liverpool Football Club,” the newspaper said.

Takt change from FSG

Edwards’ appointment as football CEO of the ownership group signals a move towards multi-club ownership, a model adopted by Manchester City and Chelsea. Both of Liverpool’s Premier League rivals use the service, using feeder clubs to sell, sign and develop players under the wider umbrella.

BBC Sport reported that FSG has walked away from the idea of investing in other football clubs. The Athletic previously reported that there had been offers from the likes of Bordeaux, Malaga and Getafe, but the situation was complicated by tightening UEFA restrictions, as well as concerns from senior management about the new club’s ability to expand its revenue streams, which led to Edwards later leaving the role.

The Telegraph reports that sources have stressed that no deal has yet been finalized and that any potential move does not indicate FSG intends to back away from its interest in Liverpool.

This investment news shows the high returns to the English top flight and the level of funding needed to continue to compete at the top level domestically and across Europe. It’s been seven years since Liverpool won the Champions League. Losing to Real Madrid in the 2022 final would leave them behind their rivals, with Paris Saint-Germain in danger of claiming back-to-back titles.
