Chelsea break transfer rules with second Arsenal hijacking after Rodgers | Soccer | Sports

If Chelsea defeat Arsenal and make new signings, they may be breaking their own golden rule of transfers. Both London clubs tried to bring Morgan Rodgers to the capital from Aston Villa, but Xabi Alonso’s side succeeded by paying a record £117 million for the England international.

This is unlikely to stop the Blues’ spending as Alonso looks to strengthen his defense. The chance to sign one of Rodgers’ World Cup team-mates on a bargain deal has emerged, with John Stones now reportedly a target for Chelsea. His contract with Manchester City has expired and he will be available on a free transfer.

The Athletic claim the Blues are considering signing the experienced centre-back on a free transfer.

Chelsea are keen to strengthen their ranks with more experienced players and Stones is currently on the short list of potential additions.

This strategy would signal that Chelsea are departing from their previous voluntary rule of signing young players with room to develop in order to maximize their sale value within the squad. This follows Sunderland’s failed attempt to sign experienced midfielder Granit Xhaka earlier this summer.

Stones spent 10 years at the Etihad Stadium, making 295 appearances, but will now embark on a new challenge elsewhere.

Stones has so far kept his options open regarding his new club, and it remains to be seen whether the centre-back ultimately completes his move to Stamford Bridge.

Arsenal are also reportedly interested in signing Stones, with Chelsea also in the race for the defender.

The Sun reports that the Gunners were considering a move for Stone after French centre-half William Saliba was injured during the World Cup and could be out for several months.

The latest development regarding Stones follows Saturday’s sensational revelation that Chelsea have completed a deal to sign Rodgers from Aston Villa.

The Blues signed Rodgers for £117m, leaving Arsenal in a draw with the England international despite the Gunners being heavily linked with his performance in recent months.

If Stones were to join Rodgers at Chelsea, it would represent another major setback for champions Arsenal.

The defender is expected to enjoy his summer break after helping England reach the World Cup semi-finals.
