Bruno Fernandes has agreed to commit his future to Manchester United. And the Portuguese superstar is expected to announce his intention to remain at Old Trafford by the end of the month.
Fernandes is currently on summer break after participating in the North American World Cup. The United captain is expected to return to pre-season training next week. Discussions are continuing between his representatives and United’s leadership over a new and improved contract.
Although no deal has been reached, Fernandes is understood to have decided to commit to United.
For the past 12 months, his future has been in doubt.
Last summer, Fernandes considered leaving United to cash in on a lucrative contract in the Saudi Professional League.
He decided to spend one more season at Old Trafford instead to see if the club matched his ambitions.
The appointment of Michael Carrick as manager brought about a big change for Fernandes.
United are continuing to sign Carrick to ensure a return to the Champions League and give him the best chance of winning the trophy next season.
Fernandes, 31, is in the final season of his current contract, with an option for a 12-month extension.
Carrick is keen to secure Fernandes’ future as he aims to win the Premier League next season.
And with Fernandes aware this could be the last big deal of his career at the highest level, last season’s Player of the Year is expected to become the club’s highest-paid star player on a deal worth around £400,000-a-week.
Retaining Fernandes would be a huge boost for United given how influential he has been since joining from Sporting Lisbon in a £47m deal in 2020.
