Argentina star defies teammate in final act of bad sportsmanship at World Cup | Soccer | Sports

Argentina forward Jose Manuel López defied his teammates with a gesture of sportsmanship as Spain hosted the World Cup on Sunday night. Ferran Torres scored the only goal of the game in extra time with a shot into the roof of the net, giving Spain two stars. Argentina dominated the match and, although they did not register a single shot until the 116th minute, they fully deserved the victory.

That came after Enzo Fernandes was sent off for a careless foul at the end of regular time, reducing the numbers. After the final whistle, violence erupted on the pitch at MetLife Stadium, culminating in chaos. Argentina national team midfielder Leandro Paredes was the one responsible for the embarrassing scene, aiming punches and kicks at Spanish players as they dashed past.

When the melee finally subsided, the majority of Argentina’s players, who were presented with the iconic golden trophy, turned their backs on Spain.

The images spread like wildfire on social media, and the brazen lack of respect drew widespread condemnation from around the world.

However, López rebelled against his Argentine colleagues and turned to Spain, who celebrated on the podium. Despite not having played, the 25-year-old was the only player among the losers to come forward and show respect to the winner.

His display of sportsmanship was praised by thousands on social media, and López was almost the only Argentine player to finish the match with any sort of dignity.

Afterwards, emotional manager Lionel Scaloni defended his players’ actions, claiming they had “showed how to lose” and set “a great example for the people and the country”.

“Spain were better, that’s true, but I want to cherish the memory (of my team), what they achieved and the value of getting this far,” the Argentina coach said at a press conference.

“We have to put a lot of value on this because it requires a lot of effort. We came here facing real circumstances, but if the players leave everything on the pitch like they did, it will be a great example for our people and our country.”

“We have to pick ourselves up again, but there’s no other way. It took us a lot to get here and I think it deserves a lot of recognition, so I certainly value the runner-up spot.”

“Of course, I wanted to win, but in the end I feel grateful. Of course, I feel sad, but that’s the only thing I can say, but when you’re giving your all, it’s very difficult to find fault with your play, whether it’s good or bad.”

“We’re generous with wins, but we have to be gracious with losses. We’re showing that we know how to lose. We lost the game and we accept that, but that doesn’t mean we stop living or forget everything we did to get here.”
