Alan Shearer has led a tribute to ‘hero’ Kevin Keegan after the former England, Newcastle United and Liverpool manager passed away after a short battle with cancer. The 75-year-old was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer in January and sadly passed away.

Keegan’s family said in a statement: “It is with great sadness that we announce that Kevin Keegan has passed away at the age of 75. Kevin was battling cancer and was surrounded by his wife and daughters in his final moments. A two-time Ballon d’Or winner, Kevin was a much-loved husband, father and grandfather.”

“The family would like to thank Kevin’s amazing medical team for all their support. This is an extremely difficult time and the family would like some space and privacy.”

Shearer, who worked under Keegan for both club and country, shared an emotional farewell on social media. The Magpies legend said: “My hero. My manager. My friend. Rest in peace boss (crying emoji).”

Keegan had a distinguished career as both a player and a manager. His spell at Newcastle United helped turn the Magpies into one of the best clubs in the country, and Toon has also paid an emotional tribute.

In a statement, the club said: “Kevin was more than just a legendary footballer and manager. He was the beating heart of Newcastle United for generations of supporters. As a player, he brought world-class talent, ambition and belief to St James’s Park and helped change perceptions of what Newcastle United was about.”

“As a manager, he set our city on fire. Kevin gave his supporters hope and pride and led a team whose style, spirit and passion captured the imagination of football fans around the world. He was much more than just an entertainer.

“Above all, Kevin forged an extraordinary bond with Newcastle based on his father Joe’s roots. He understood our people. He embraced the North East with genuine and abiding passion and in return earned his rightful place in the hearts of millions of people.

“Kevin’s influence will not be measured by appearances or results; it will live on in the memories he created with club and country, the dreams he inspired wherever he went and the generations of supporters around the world who fell in love with football because of him.”

“At this very sad time, we extend our love and deepest condolences to Kevin’s wife Jean, his family, friends, and all those who had the privilege of knowing and working with him. Today we mourn the loss of a true giant of history and, at the appropriate time, we will carefully consider how to form a lasting tribute to Kevin’s remarkable life and achievements. Rest in Peace, King Kev.”

After leaving the Magpies, King Kev managed Fulham, England and Manchester City, winning the Second Division with the Cottage and the First Division with City.

“Everyone at Manchester City is shocked to learn that former manager Kevin Keegan has passed away at the age of 75,” the club said in a statement. “Kevin was an innovative manager who brought optimism and vibrancy to City during his four-year tenure.

“The 2001/02 promotional campaign will never be forgotten and Kevin re-established us as a top team in the Premier League in the years that followed. Our thoughts are with Kevin’s family and friends at this very difficult time.”

Keegan wasn’t just a decorated manager, he was also a great player, winning two Ballon d’Ors and almost every trophy there was to win during his time at Liverpool.

The Reds also paid tribute to Keegan, saying: “We are deeply saddened by the passing of the legendary Kevin Keegan and we mourn his passing.

“His indomitable spirit and amazing contributions will forever be etched in our history and his legacy will live on. Rest in Peace, Kevin. 1951 to 2026.”

Meanwhile, former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher tweeted: “Rest in peace Kevin Keegan. One of the greatest players this country has ever produced. Trophies, goals and two Ballon d’Or winners show he was an absolute giant of the English game.”

“One of the most important people in making LFC (Liverpool) what it is today.”

England’s official channels also paid tribute to the former Three Lions manager, writing: “We are incredibly saddened to hear the news of the passing of Kevin Keegan, an OBE.

“Kevin won 63 caps and scored 21 goals for his country from 1972 to 1982, before taking charge of the Three Lions from 1999 to 2000. Our condolences go out to Kevin’s family, friends and former club.”
