Kylian Mbappé won the race for the Golden Boot at the 2026 World Cup after a fantastic tournament in North America, finishing the tournament with 10 goals. This was despite Lionel Messi having a huge advantage in Sunday’s final against Spain with a chance to increase his tally to eight.

But the 39-year-old was unable to deliver as the nation was left heartbroken as they lost 1-0 in extra time at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. 106 minutes into the match, Ferran Torres broke the deadlock for the European champions, not only giving his country the lead, but ultimately winning the match.

This was a remarkable tournament for Mbappé, as he once again proved his ability on the world stage in North America. The 27-year-old got off to a strong start last month, scoring twice in France’s opening game against Senegal.

Then, in his home country’s next Group I match, France, as usual, won 3-0 against Iraq, scoring two more goals. Mbappé failed to find the scoresheet in the final group stage game, a 4–1 win against Norway, but was in form again in the round of 32 against Sweden, scoring two more goals in a 3–0 win to take his total points tally to six.

Another goal came from the penalty spot in France’s 1-0 win over Paraguay in the Round of 16, and another from open play in their 2-0 win over Morocco in the quarter-finals. On the other hand, he also scored twice when France lost 6-4 to England in the third-place match, giving Mbappé the Golden Boot award.

Although he ended up finishing fourth in the tournament, it was a great individual World Cup for Mbappé, and he also managed to set a record for the most goals scored in the tournament’s history. With these 10 goals, Mbappe now has 22 goals in total at the World Cup. By the way, before the ball was kicked, Germany’s Miroslav Klose held that record with a total of 16.
