Liverpool icon Graeme Souness has doubts whether England’s midfield duo Declan Rice and Elliot Anderson are truly world-class.
A fatigued Rice struggled to make an impact in the tournament while Manchester City’s £116m signing Anderson underwhelmed against Argentina.
“One is very young, 22 (sic) 23, so he (Anderson) has a chance to get better. Declan won’t get any better. He’s as good as he was at 27,” Souness told Sports Uncensored.
“I don’t see enough football for both of them. I think they’re players who recycle the ball, but I don’t think they hurt people…I think these two lads have their limits. For me, Declan Rice has his limits.”
“I hear people talking about Declan Rice as a world-class footballer, but I think he’s probably a centre-half. There’s nothing I don’t like about him in terms of his attitude towards the game, his athleticism, his dedication from the first moment to the last. His athleticism, there’s nothing I don’t like about him.”
“My criticism of him is that he doesn’t have enough football. They’re talking, ‘Well, look how he runs with the ball.'” A midfield center player shouldn’t do that. ”
