Liverpool’s new manager Andoni Iraola will welcome news that one of his best players is set to sign a new contract as he prepares to manage his first season at Anfield
Dominik Szoboszlai has reached an agreement in principle on a new contract and is believed to be at the stage of committing his future to the club.
The news will be a big boost for new Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola, who was appointed to replace Arne Slott last month. Szoboszlai was one of Liverpool’s most consistent performers during a difficult 2025-26 season, which saw Slott lose his job after overseeing a fifth-place finish and at times also playing in the right-back position.
Szoboszlai has two years left on his current contract heading into the summer, but his form has fueled speculation about his long-term future, with the player himself admitting negotiations had stalled in April.
However, the Guardian has confirmed that terms have been tentatively agreed, meaning Szoboszlai will remain at Anfield for the time being.
Such news will be welcomed not only by Iraola as he prepares to take over his first season in charge, but also by others, including club legend Steven Gerrard, who has made it clear he is a big Szoboszlai fan.
The Hungarian captain’s adventurous, all-action style of play and tendency to score spectacular goals has already seen him being compared to one of Liverpool’s all-time greats. And Gerrard even predicted earlier this year that Szoboszlai would one day follow in his footsteps by wearing the captain’s armband.
“I like his mentality,” Gerrard told TNT Sports in March. “He is evolving and has grown a lot since being a Liverpool player.
“We have obviously signed a player of great talent. He is in the prime of his career and I think Liverpool will see the best of him.”
“I hope he stays for a long time because I think we have a potential captain there. The way he plays, the consistency, the mentality, you can hear it in his voice.”
“He’s going straight to the next game and talking about Brighton. I love that about him. He’s in great shape right now. He’s full of confidence. He’s got everything going well. He just has to keep it up and stay fit.”
