England will face Argentina in the World Cup semi-finals, but the only Liverpool player involved in the match was Alexis Mac Allister, with the Premier League club sharing a post about the match
Liverpool have been slammed by hundreds of soccer fans for a “disgraceful” post in the run-up to England’s World Cup match against Argentina. The two teams will meet in the semi-finals on Wednesday, with Argentina’s Alexis Mac Allister the only Liverpool player remaining in the tournament.
The Liverpool midfielder won the 2022 World Cup when he was a Brighton player and remains a key part of Lionel Scaloni’s side. Since the start of the tournament, Liverpool have been sharing matchday posts on their social media channels involving one of their players.
And in keeping with that tradition, the Premier League club posted on Wednesday morning: “Macca and Argentina take on England for a place in the #FIFAWorldCup final.” The post included an emoji of a bent arm and an Argentina flag.
However, he was not well received by England supporters. One fan lashed out at X, saying: “This is an absolute disgrace,” while another wrote: “An absolutely awful post from LFC.”

Another asked: “Liverpool fans… say what you want, but this is stupid behavior from the management,” while a fourth added: “Why would an English club do this?”
But others took a different view, with one claiming: “There wasn’t even a word ‘good luck’ or ‘good luck’ in this post. It literally just means Liverpool players are playing a football game today. People really need a day off.”
Another source said: “Look at the club’s reaction. One of our players is playing in the World Cup semi-finals tonight and there’s not even a mention of wishing him luck. So they’re still wondering why some Liverpool fans don’t feel a connection to the national team.”
Mac Allister has never played against England before, the last time being in a friendly in 2005. But the 27-year-old is no stranger to playing against Premier League players, although he believes England’s approach is different.
“We play against most of them every weekend and it’s clear that they are physically very strong,” Mac Allister said in a press conference. “Having said that, I think we’ve seen during this World Cup, I don’t know if you’d call it fatigue, but they haven’t played with the same intensity that characterizes the Premier League.
“I don’t know if it’s because of the heat, the weather or other factors, but it’s clear they’re a great team. We have a lot of respect for them, as we have for every national team we’ve played against.”

He added: “It’s clear that the mental aspect is very important. I think the mind is the most important thing for us and for football players in general.”
“Obviously there are tactical and footballing aspects that define this sport, but the most important thing is to combine those two. We have great confidence in ourselves. We know exactly what we are doing and we have no intention of changing our approach.”
