Manager Chris Sutton has claimed that Thomas Tuchel’s “coaching disaster” has raised serious questions about whether he is the right man to lead England forward.
Tuchel led the Three Lions to the World Cup semi-finals in his first major tournament as manager. However, despite being given the mandate to end England’s 60 years of suffering, they ultimately fell short, losing 2-1 to Argentina, adding another bitter chapter to England’s World Cup history.
England took the lead against a formidable opponent with Anthony Gordon’s opening goal in the 10th minute of the second half. However, rather than taking advantage of that advantage, Tuchel ordered the charge to be pushed back further.
The former Chelsea manager then assembled a cavalcade of defense, including Dan Byrne, Ezri Konsa and Nico O’Reilly.
England finally conceded with five minutes left on the clock when Enzo Fernandes took advantage of the midfield’s absence to score an equaliser.
Then, in the second minute of stoppage time, Lautaro Martínez headed in a goal from Lionel Messi’s cross, sealing the team’s place in the World Cup final once again.
Mr Tuchel has taken on more responsibilities in the immediate aftermath, and Mr Sutton, who works as a pundit on BBC Radio 5 Live, went so far as to say this could affect his future role.
Sutton said: “That was a disaster with Thomas Tuchel’s coaching, the fact that England came forward and basically handed the initiative to Argentina. It’s a very simple game of football, defending deep, leaving another defender. You have to get on the pitch.”
“You can’t expect to defend for 30 minutes against Argentina’s quality. My concerns are all about the coach. He made changes, he was negative. So the question I ask is: how can we trust Thomas Tuchel to take this team forward?”
“No matter what anyone says, England have had a generous run in this competition, but they haven’t played well over 90 minutes.
“We had a big chance to get over the line in the World Cup semi-final against an average Argentina team and in the last 30 minutes they looked far from average and I think England helped us with that.”
“I think that was a coaching disaster.”
Tuchel was hired in 2024 to replace Gareth Southgate on a contract until the end of this competition. However, after qualifying for the World Cup, he was given a two-year extension.
Minutes after the England international’s heartbreaking sending off, Tuchel insisted he had no regrets about his changes. He told the BBC: “I have no regrets at the moment. The team gave their all and we were very close. We deserved to be 1-0 up.”
“We played the better game, probably the best game in the circumstances. The team was on top and although we couldn’t get over the line, we had no regrets.”
“I think we saw throughout the game and a strong group mentality. We played the game the way it was, played against the stronger teams in the group, traveled long distances, played at high altitudes, played with 10 men, played in the heat and overcame all obstacles.”
“It was a very close game today. Now is not the time to analyze the whole tournament. We lost an important game, so we just played our game.”
