Manager Thomas Tuchel insists England will prepare for the fight of their lives with as much “emotion, grit and mentality” as Argentina.
Tuchel said his players were ready to “take on the challenge” as they face arch-rivals England, who are hoping to play in their first World Cup since winning in 1966.
“We know what’s going to happen, we know what we’re up against, but we’re emotional, we’ve got the grit, we’ve got the mentality we need to counter it, and we’re ready for it,” Tuchel said.
“Now is the time to try. Now is the time to try. They know what’s going to happen, it’s a big game, it’s a big opportunity.
“We’re so happy to be here, so happy, so excited. It felt like we were in a different mood again at camp, like, ‘Oh, we’re so close.’
Tuchel is also well aware of the rivalry between England and Argentina that extends beyond the pitch. But he also believes they are ready for the match against Argentina.
He added: “I know some of the players and I’ve coached some of the players and you can feel it. You can see it. They have this kind of edge. You can feel it when they score goals and when the games are close.”
“They’re a tough team to beat, that’s just the way it is. They’re a tough group. They’re pretty much the same group they were four years ago. You can see the cohesion, you can see the sacrifices they’ve put into it. They don’t panic when they’re behind. They believe in their style.”
“And their style is a very emotional style. It was like that in Qatar and it’s still like that. They have the same coach. And of course they’re also inspired by history. They’re inspired by history. It means a lot to them.”
