Arsenal had linked Newcastle star Bruno Guimarães as a potential summer signing, but his move has hit a hurdle and the Gunners could end their interest in the Brazilian midfielder.
Arsenal are reportedly set to abandon their bid for Newcastle’s Bruno Guimarães after being misled about the price they would have to pay. The Brazilian has emerged as a priority target for the north London side in recent days, with Mikel Arteta keen to add to his midfield options.
It has been suggested that Arsenal are considering a move for Guimarães after he requested a move away from St James’ Park this summer. Subsequently, there were further reports claiming that he had agreed a five-year contract with Arsenal.
However, a summer move appears to have been put on hold for now, as misunderstandings over the price the north London side would have to pay have put doubt in the minds of Arsenal bosses.
According to the Telegraph, the Gunners were told this by his agent and were of the opinion that an offer of around £50m would be enough to persuade Newcastle to sell him.
That does not appear to be the case, with the Magpies already asking around £100m this summer after selling Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon. Arsenal are apparently willing to move on without paying that much.
Former Newcastle owner Mehldad Godusi has spoken out about the current situation, slamming the proposal as “complete nonsense”.
For now, Guimarães remains a Newcastle player, with a contract until 2028, with an option for further seasons. It was previously suggested that Arsenal’s Premier League rivals Manchester United had agreed a deal for him, but manager Eddie Howe at the time denied the rumors.
He said, “I don’t even know how to react to that. I don’t even think I should because it’s a waste of energy.”
“I don’t mean to be rude, because I don’t think this is the place for that. It’s nonsense for me. Bruno is our captain and he’s working hard. He’s currently injured and his only focus is to get back to fitness. For me, it’s not the time to think about it.”
“With the transfer window open in the summer, things like that will make more sense. To say that our captain is in negotiations with other clubs is, above all, a complete disrespect to Bruno. He is fully committed here.”
