Manchester United could make a second big profit with Alejandro Garnacho’s possible departure from Chelsea, following Mason Greenwood’s potential move to Fenerbahce. Garnacho has found life difficult since joining Stamford Bridge from Old Trafford for £40m last summer.

The Argentine made a precious little impression in west London as the Blues languished in 10th place in the Premier League, missing out on European football altogether. This has fueled speculation that the 22-year-old will be given a chance, with the Press Association reporting that Chelsea are open to a sale and would be open to an offer in the region of £42.5m.

United could benefit even more from Garnacho’s sale last year, as they shrewdly negotiated a 10 per cent sell-on clause in his contract, giving Chelsea the right to reduce future transfer fees if they chose to cash out. Reports emerging from Italy claim Roma are eyeing United’s academy graduate.

It has been suggested that the Serie A club could pursue a permanent move if they wish to qualify for the Champions League, but ideally they would like to sign the winger on loan with an option to buy. Garnacho is an academy product who joined United from Atletico Madrid in 2020 for just £100,000, so the original £40m fee he received from Chelsea was registered as pure profit under the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Regulations (PSR).

Exactly the same economic benefits apply to United’s future sales proceeds. This follows reports from Turkey suggesting Fenerbahce are expected to sign Greenwood for €40m (about £34m) plus €2m in bonuses. The Red Devils released the forward to French Ligue 1 side Marseille in the summer of 2024.

United also negotiated a sell-on clause as part of that deal, giving Marseille the right to significantly reduce any transfer fees they might receive in the future. Although early reports differed, this provision is widely understood to be in the 40-50 percent range.

According to ESPN, Fenerbahce and Atletico Madrid have reached an agreement with Marseille. United are set to earn 14 million euros (about £11.9 million) if Greenwood chooses to move to Turkey, and 15.7 million euros (about £13.3 million) if he returns to Madrid, where he was on loan at Getafe during his time at United.

Greenwood has scored 48 goals in 81 appearances for Marseille. His outstanding performances prompted former Marseille manager Roberto de Zerbi to offer him Ballon d’Or glory.

He said: “I see him every day and he has great potential. There is no other player at the same level in Europe.”

“He has the potential to win the Ballon d’Or. It’s up to him to fight as hard as he can for that. At the level of the qualities that nature has given him, the qualities that his parents have given him, I think he deserves the Ballon d’Or.”

“We want him to be more consistent. We know he needs to press with more intensity and he needs to manage the ball better when the team is in a pinch. He needs to not lose the ball easily and keep the ball for the team to move up, because he has the ability to do that.”
