According to the Telegraph, Arsenal are considering whether to pursue a move to sign Bruno Guimarães.
The Gunners are said to have originally believed he could move for just £50m, but were surprised by his asking price.
Mikel Arteta’s side are said to have become interested after being told by an intermediary that he could leave St James’ Park for a bargain price. But the Magpies are taking a tough stance.
Arsenal are said to be encouraged by the prospect of launching a £50m bid to start talks after representatives met with former Newcastle co-owner Amanda Staveley and indicated they would be open to such an offer if the Magpies fail to qualify for the Champions League. But that was never guaranteed, and Staveley has since left.
Guimarães has no release clause and has two years left on his contract, with an option for another year. According to reports, Arsenal are currently considering paying more than £50 million for the player, who will turn 29 this year.
