Mo Salah became a free agent after leaving Liverpool and negotiations over his future have intensified at club level following Egypt’s World Cup exit on Tuesday.
MLS side Sporting Kansas City has developed an ambitious plan to acquire Mo Salah on a free transfer. Salah, 34, spent nine trophy-winning years at Anfield and is without a club since leaving Liverpool.
The forward was focused on his exploits for Egypt until Tuesday’s World Cup exit. Despite leading 2-0 until the 79th minute, Salah’s team lost the game 3-2 in the final stages.
Saudi Arabia has long been rumored to be his next destination, but talks over a move to the cash-rich league have reportedly stalled. And now Sporting has emerged as a potential suitor.
According to The Athletic, the Kansas-based team would be in pole position if Salah decides to move to Major League Soccer, with multiple clubs expressing interest. Sporting’s new majority owner, Peter Marouk, is the son of Egyptian immigrants.

However, Salah’s hope is to remain in Europe. The Liverpool legend has been courted by Saudi Arabian clubs for years, most notably in the summer of 2023 when Al Ittihad made a staggering £150m bid.
The Sun reported that Salah’s wage demands had motivated the blockers. If a compromise is reached, al-Hilal and al-Qadsia are seen as the most likely destinations.
Salah was brought to Anfield in 2017 by former Liverpool sporting director Michael Edwards, who is also an Al Hilal target. Edwards, 47, will step down from his role at Fenway Sports Group this week, and Al Hilal wants him to take over as CEO.

Although considered a “long shot” within the company, Sporting are keen to bring Salah across the Atlantic and make him MLS’s latest new star. La Liga icons Robert Lewandowski and Antoine Griezmann both moved to North America this summer.
Marouk has big plans in Kansas City, and following the news about Salah, he posted, “The promises made will definitely be kept. There are a lot of conversations happening. Either way, this team will be much better in the second half and even better by the sprint season.”
Salah’s agent Ramy Abbas Issa gave an update on his client’s future last month. “Mohamed is perfectly fine and neither he nor I like to discuss sensitive plans for the future with anyone not involved in them,” Issa wrote. “He and I are both very private about these things. Sure, people may ask questions and you may get a standard polite response, but that’s about it.”
