Manchester United will also benefit from a significant sale price, with Alejandro Garnacho set to leave Chelsea and Mason Greenwood set to join Fenerbahce. United are set to significantly increase Michael Carrick’s transfer funds if both players leave their current clubs. Garnacho has endured a difficult period since joining Stamford Bridge from Old Trafford for £40m last summer. The Argentine had minimal impact in west London as the Blues languished in 10th place in the Premier League, missing out on European football altogether.
This has sparked speculation that the 22-year-old could be on the move, with the Press Association reporting that Chelsea are open to a sale and are considering a bid of around £42.5 million. United have cleverly included a 10 per cent sell-on clause in Garnacho’s contract if he leaves Chelsea, meaning he will receive the extra money they received from last year’s sale. This would guarantee Chelsea a portion of his future transfer fee should they choose to sell. Roma are keeping an eye on United’s academy product, according to reports from Italy.
The Serie A side have qualified for the Champions League and could pursue a permanent deal if they wish, but it is understood they will aim to sign the winger on loan with an option to buy.
Given that Garnacho progressed through the academy system and joined United from Atletico Madrid in 2020 for just £100,000, the initial £40m he received from Chelsea was recorded as pure profit under the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Regulations (PSR).
Exactly the same economic benefits apply to any sale proceeds that United receives in the future. This follows reports from Turkey suggesting Fenerbahce are open to signing Greenwood for £34m (€40m) plus €2m in bonuses.
The Red Devils released the forward to French Ligue 1 side Marseille in the summer of 2024.

As part of the deal, United also negotiated a sell-on clause that would entitle United to a proportionate amount of any future transfer fees that Marseille might charge. Although early reports vary, the provision is widely understood to be between 40 and 50 percent.
According to ESPN, Fenerbahce and Atletico Madrid have reached an agreement with Marseille. United could earn £11.9m (€14m) if Greenwood chooses to move to Turkey, but £13.3m (€15.7m) if he returns to Madrid. Previously in Madrid, he was loaned to Getafe while on United’s roster.
Greenwood made 81 appearances for Marseille, finding the back of the net 48 times. His remarkable performances have led former Marseille manager and current Tottenham manager Roberto de Zerbi to back him in the race for the Ballon d’Or.
He said: “I see him every day and he has great potential. There is no other player at the same level in Europe.”
“He has the potential to win the Ballon d’Or. It’s up to him to fight as hard as he can for that. At the level of the qualities that nature has given him, the qualities that his parents have given him, I think he deserves the Ballon d’Or.”
“We want him to be more consistent. We know he needs to press with more intensity and he needs to manage the ball better when the team is in a pinch. He needs to not lose the ball easily and keep the ball for the team to move up, because he has the ability to do that.”
