Arsenal have already signed two players in the summer transfer window, but the next player could be a familiar face to Gunners fans after he leaves the Emirates in 2022.

Arsenal are interested in re-signing Greek international Dinos Mavropanos after he was demoted from West Ham. Mavropanos, 28, is wanted by multiple clubs and could be sold as part of a fire sale at the London Stadium.

The defender is no stranger to the Gunners, who signed him for £1.8 million from Greek club PAS Giannina in January 2018, making him one of Arsene Wenger’s last signings. In his first two years at the Emirates, Mavropanos only made seven first-team appearances before being loaned to German side Nuremberg in search of regular appearances.

Stuttgart then accepted him on loan for the next two seasons before the Bundesliga signed him on a permanent deal worth up to £5 million in the summer of 2023. But a year later he returned to the Premier League as West Ham paid him £21 million for his services.

Sky Sports has now reported that Arsenal are considering re-signing Mavropanos. The Gunners have praised the 28-year-old’s progress since leaving the Emirates.

It is worth noting that Arsenal have a wealth of right-handed centre-backs in William Saliba, Cristian Mosquera and Ben White. However, White has fallen down the rankings and it has been suggested that he could leave this summer.

Arsenal will have to fend off interest from Europe if they are to bring Mavropanos back. Although West Ham were relegated to the Championship on the final day of the season, his individual performances were excellent and he won the club’s Player of the Year award.

Mavropanos scored three goals during the chase, increasing Nuno Espirito Santo’s side’s chances of survival. However, West Ham were unable to get over the line and will play in the second division next season for the first time since the 2011-12 season.

One of those goals came against Manchester City, which boosted Arsenal’s title chances and they finally lifted the Premier League trophy in May. After the goal, Arteta said of Mavropanos: “He was a very, very good person.”

“He’s also a player who was signed just before I arrived, but he also had a long-term injury and didn’t get as much playing time,” explained the Arsenal manager. “But it’s good to see him doing really well.”
