Brazil were shockingly expelled from the World Cup and Erling Haaland inspired Norway in what could be Neymar’s last appearance for the Selecao after a glittering career.
Neymar could retire from football within days after the failure of the Brazil World Cup. The South American team entered the tournament as one of the favorites to win the trophy.
However, they could only advance to the last 16, losing to Erling Haaland-inspired Norway. After this match, Neymar, who was controversially selected in Carlo Ancelotti’s 26-man squad, announced his retirement from international football.
“I tried,” Neymar said. “It started here at MetLife Stadium and I’m done here. I’m done.”
Now, it appears the 34-year-old may hang up the boots for good. According to reports in his home country of Brazil, Neymar is considering retiring completely and may not even see his contract with his boyhood club Santos come to an end.
It has been suggested that he will reflect on the World Cup in Brazil and think carefully before making a decision. In any case, Neymar’s father has urged his son to withdraw his retirement from international football.
“Oh my son… what a journey,” Neymar Sr. said on social media. “What a beautiful path. Challenging. Sometimes painful, but infinitely blessed. The decisions you make today will not determine your entire story.
“A dream that has not yet come true does not mean it is dead. The end of the story is not determined by difficult moments…”
Neymar Sr. added: “I watched this young boy grow into one of the greatest players of his generation.” “When I look back, I see more than trophies, goals, contracts, and awards. I see miracles. I see deliverance. I see promises fulfilled.
“And as I look to the future, I remain just as confident. The best is independent of age and circumstances. As a father, I want to ask you this: Son, please continue playing football.”
“Rediscover the joy of having the ball at your feet. Smile again on the field. You are healthy today. God has given you another chance to do what you have always loved. Enjoy soccer. Don’t carry the weight of decisions, criticism, expectations, and setbacks that life brings on your shoulders.”
“Don’t be afraid of tomorrow. Live for today. Train. Smile. Play soccer. Make people happy again. Do what God has put in your hands since you were a child. And never forget that you are always loved by God even before the world praises you.”
Neymar has won 130 caps and scored 80 goals for Brazil during his career. He represented Santos, Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and Al Hilal. He made an impressive return to Santos last year and has since scored 17 goals in 43 appearances.
