Ruben Amorim was sacked by Manchester United in January and the Portuguese manager has been linked with the Red Devils several times since being appointed by Italian giants AC Milan.

Manager Ruben Amorim has apologized to Manchester United fans for not saying goodbye six months after his sacking. The Portuguese manager left Old Trafford in January after a disappointing 18 months in charge.

Amorim, 41, has since taken time off from work to join Italian giants AC Milan. He was officially announced by his new employers on Wednesday and spoke about his time with the Red Devils, even feeling compelled to apologize for his departure.

“The only thing I can say is that I learned a lot, but I also made some mistakes. I didn’t have a chance to say something to the Manchester United fans at the moment, which is a shame. I’m really proud to have coached them for a year.”

Commenting on his new job, Amorim added: “It’s an honor to be here (AC Milan). I’m very happy. You can see the feeling of the club here. I love Milanello. I think it’s a place with history and it’s quiet.”

“People say it’s old. I love old places like that. Everything is there. I love the staff. It feels like home.”

“It’s a personal thing because I’ve been following Milan since I was young. It’s difficult to take on this kind of challenge. The beliefs I had at Sporting are the same beliefs I have now… with a bit more of a hungry spirit.”

“Maybe it’s because of the last adventure. I’m really hungry for success. I believe in myself and especially in the club. I know it’s a tough league and I know that I need to know Italian football well. I think I’m a quick learner and I’ll strive for that.”

Amorim’s recent comments are not the first time he has mentioned United since moving to Italy. In an interview with Calciomercato, he claimed that his new job at Milan was an even bigger challenge than the one he faced in Manchester.

The player said: “I’m really, really happy to be here and it’s an honor to be the coach of Milan. Why did I choose Milan? If you read my old interviews you’ll understand. It’s a special club for me. Why did I choose Milan?”

“This is a huge challenge and even if I told myself after my last challenge (at Manchester United) that I would accept a smaller challenge, I accepted it.

“This is probably a bigger challenge than the last. I and all my staff are proud to be here.”
