Jordan Henderson provided an update on his recovery after undergoing surgery on a broken wrist on Wednesday. The 36-year-old took to social media for the first time since being stabbed in a freak accident at the World Cup.

Henderson underwent surgery on a broken wrist and joined up with the England squad in Kansas City. The Brentford veteran confirmed the procedure went well and thanked the hospital after the freak injury following the victory in Mexico City.

“Surgery is over! Get ready for the big surgery on Saturday. Thank you to all the staff who took care of me at Kansas City Orthopedic Institute, especially the three surgeons who performed the surgery: Kenneth P. Unruh, M.D., Mark J. Winston, M.D., and Kirk McCullough, M.D.,” Henderson wrote on Instagram.

England team-mates Marcus Rashford and Morgan Rodgers were quick to show their support for their affected teammates, adding “heart emojis” in the comments section. His club, Brentford, also sent a message saying, “Quick recovery for Jordan!”

Veteran Henderson joined the group ahead of Saturday’s quarterfinal match against Norway and is headed to Kansas City to support. He’s a very popular guy in the team, so that would be a big boost for the team.

Henderson sustained the freak injury after celebrating with fans after a 3-2 win over Mexico at the Estadio Azteca, jumping on an advertising board and taking an awkward fall. He was carried on a stretcher by medical staff and required oxygen before being flown to a hospital in the capital.

This was after he spoke for the first time since his traumatic experience inside Aztec on Sunday evening. “It was definitely an unforgettable night! A great performance despite all the challenges,” Henderson said on Instagram Tuesday.

“So proud to be part of this special team (emoji). Thank you for all the support. Saturday will be another big event.”

His colleagues in England reacted immediately. Co-captain Declan Rice commented, “Someone,” to which Morgan Rogers responded, “What a bastard.” Elliott Anderson and Jed Spence also showed their love for the injured midfielder with ‘heart’ emojis.

Henderson has made it clear that he wants to remain with the rest of the squad to provide support and is in regular contact with his team-mates. He suffered a radius fracture in his forearm, which will keep him out for the remainder of the tournament even if England reach the final.

The BBC reported that manager Thomas Tuchel plans to ban his players from jumping over fences following his injury. The German manager will be keen to avoid further bizarre injuries, especially off the pitch, as England aim to reach their first final in 60 years.

They face Erling Haaland’s Norway on Saturday before potentially facing Argentina or Switzerland in the semi-finals. If Tuchel’s side advance beyond the top four, they will likely face either France or Spain in the final, which will be held at New York’s New Jersey Stadium on July 19.
