David Bentley was seen taunting Mexican fans during the dramatic last-16 win over England at the Estadio Azteca, and the former Three Lions winger shared a video from the stands as tensions soared.
Former England player David Bentley received chilling threats from an enraged Mexican supporter after he made a “cut his throat” gesture during the Three Lions’ victory at the Azteca Stadium.
The bandanna-wearing 41-year-old was filmed throwing a rude gesture back at the crowd as tensions rose in the stands during the dramatic last-16 clash, and previously joked: “I might not make it out of here alive.”
He had posted several videos from atop the terrace of the legendary stadium. Wearing a retro blue England shirt, he appeared to be positioned near the front of the away supporters section, which was far outnumbered by the home supporters.
While the Three Lions took an early 2-0 lead, the hosts grew increasingly angry as England fans taunted them throughout the match. Tensions escalated further as Mexico withdrew a point, with a thin police cordon struggling to keep rival supporters apart.
Several Mexican fans were seen confronting Bentley directly following Jarrell Quansah’s red card. One bespectacled supporter gave him the middle finger and thrust a finger menacingly at his throat.
Another wild fan aggressively motioned for Bentley to come towards him, then mimicked a throat-slitting motion. Bentley fired back, calling the man terrible.
He posted on Instagram, “Red card! It’s getting delicious!” Rangers legend Ally McCoist commented: “My money was on the yin who ate you instead of slitting your throat…oh, that yin of Gregory, it’s like he couldn’t fight sleep.”
Another supporter chimed in: “Bentley was always a windup.”
However, it was Bentley who had the last laugh, as England booked their place in the quarter-finals with a dramatic victory, supported by a resolute defense with six clearances from substitute Dan Byrne, who came on from the 75th minute.
The former Blackburn Rovers man later posted several clips of himself celebrating with a group of Three Lions fans on social media. Jubilant supporters paraded through the Aztec concourse with trumpets and drums in hand.
“Ten to the Aztecs! It might even be better than ‘Bentley from the halfway line’. The euphoric spectacle lasted well into the night across Mexico as England’s 10 dramatically sealed their place in the last eight.”
