England star Jordan Henderson updated fans on Wednesday on his recovery following surgery on a fractured wrist. The 36-year-old broke his silence on social media for the first time since being knifed after sustaining a freak injury at the World Cup.
Henderson has returned to the England squad at Kansas City following successful treatment for a broken wrist. The Brentford stalwart confirmed that the surgery had gone well and thanked the hospital staff who unfortunately sustained the injury after the victory in Mexico City.
“Surgery is over! Get ready for the big surgery on Saturday. Thank you to all the staff who took care of me at Kansas City Orthopedic Institute, especially the three surgeons who performed the surgery: Kenneth P. Unruh, M.D., Mark J. Winston, M.D., and Kirk McCullough, M.D.,” Henderson wrote on Instagram.
England players Marcus Rashford and Morgan Rodgers were quick to show support for their injured team-mate, posting heart emojis in the comments section. His club Brentford also sent a message of congratulations, saying, “Hope Jordan makes a speedy recovery!”
The experienced Henderson is heading to Kansas City to support the group ahead of Saturday’s quarterfinal game against Norway. Given his status as one of the most popular players, his presence will definitely bring a huge improvement to the team.
Henderson suffered the shocking injury when he jumped over a billboard and landed awkwardly while celebrating with supporters after a 3-2 win over Mexico at the Estadio Azteca. He required oxygen as he was carried away on a stretcher by medics and then transferred to a hospital in the capital.
This follows his first public comments since the harrowing incident at Azteca on Sunday evening. “It was definitely an unforgettable night! A great performance despite all the challenges,” Henderson said on Instagram Tuesday. “So proud to be part of this special team (emoji). Thank you for all the support. Saturday will be another big event.”
Henderson has expressed his desire to remain with the team to provide moral support and is in regular contact with his fellow players. He suffered a radius fracture in his forearm and will be ruled out for the remainder of the tournament, even if England reach the final.
According to the BBC, manager Thomas Tuchel plans to ban his players from jumping over billboards due to injuries. The German manager will be desperate to prevent further unnecessary injuries, especially off the pitch, as England aim to reach their first final in 60 years.
They face Erling Haaland’s Norway on Saturday, followed by a possible semi-final against Argentina or Switzerland. If Tuchel’s side make it through to the last four, either France or Spain will likely stand in their way to glory at New York’s New Jersey Stadium on July 19.
