Manager Thomas Tuchel provided an update on the injury situation after England trained in Mexico City on Saturday afternoon ahead of their World Cup Round of 16 clash with the runners-up.
Manager Thomas Tuchel has confirmed that Jarrell Quansah is fit to face Mexico, but the involvement of Reece James, who missed the team’s final training session at Pumas’ Quarry, is doubtful.
Quansah suffered an ankle problem in the game against Panama in New Jersey and missed the 2-1 win against DR Congo in Atlanta, but returned to the field with the Three Lions.
“You’ve seen Jarrell train, Jarrell has trained well and is fully available. Reese could probably be on the bench, but we need a final assessment and medical opinion from the doctor if this makes sense,” Tuchel said.
James had missed the past two games after injuring his hamstring in Boston’s scoreless draw with Ghana.
There is hope that if he overcomes the disadvantages and wins in Mexico City, he may be able to represent England at this World Cup as well.
Meanwhile, Tuchel seized the opportunity to enjoy such a unique match at a venue steeped in football history.
The German went on to say he wants to lead England to the quarter-finals in Miami, saying: “This was a really symbolic match on a big stage and we feel that too. The people were very friendly, very respectful and very emotional.”
“Of course they will be rooting for their team tomorrow, which is completely normal. We had a great training facility today. It was a beautiful environment, very calm, at the highest level. That happens sometimes, you know the situation.”
“You talked about it. But people take care of what needs to be taken care of. We need a strong performance and I think we can do that.”
Jordan Henderson claims the magnitude of this match is incomparable to any he has ever played.
“No, to be honest, I don’t think this game compares to any game I’ve ever played in. Yes, I played in a lot of different games in the Champions League, but in the World Cup, against Mexico in Mexico, I don’t think anything compares to that.”
“That’s why it’s such a good game to be a part of. And, yeah, I think everyone’s just excited and really looking forward to the game and the challenge.”
