The former Liverpool captain was rushed to hospital, requiring oxygen for treatment. In a post-match interview with the BBC, England manager Thomas Tuchel admitted it looked “really bad” and suggested he may need surgery.
“It’s not good, it’s not good,” Tuchel said. “Next we got a red card for the right defender. Jordan just fell down with a wrist injury. It looks really bad.” At a subsequent press conference, manager Tuchel revealed: “I injured my wrist and went to the hospital, but it’s quite serious. It’s not suitable for this night. I don’t know if there will be any treatment.”
Now, new footage has revealed the exact moment Henderson was injured. After England’s traditional post-victory ritual – hopping over billboards to join supporters to hear Oasis’ Wonderwall play, the players began to return to the pitch.
But Henderson didn’t come back unscathed. In fact, after seeing Dan Byrne climbing back up the billboard, Henderson appeared to grab something on his way back before tripping and crashing to the ground.
It was the landing itself that was costly. The Brentford midfielder put his left arm on the turf as he tried to stop the fall, only for it to appear that his wrist was broken on impact.
Henderson’s teammates quickly gathered around him, forming a crowd, and medical staff rushed to his aid, but he was carried off the pitch on a stretcher while receiving oxygen. The tragic incident occurred as he and his teammates were celebrating a hard-fought 3-2 victory. England took a 2-0 lead with two goals from Jude Bellingham, but Julian Quinones pulled one back for Mexico just before the end of the first half.
Mexico’s confidence was boosted early in the second half when right-back Jarrell Quansah was sent off for a reckless challenge, but Tuchel’s side quickly hit back with a penalty from captain Kane after Anthony Gordon was brought down. Raul Jimenez halved the deficit for the second time with his own spot-kick, causing England’s nerves, but Tuchel’s side defended well to secure the three points.
England face Norway in the World Cup quarter-finals in Miami on Saturday night. Coach Staal Solbakken’s team produced a stunning comeback against Brazil, 2-1, thanks to Erling Haaland’s two goals, and advanced to the final eight.
