Henderson was rushed to a nearby hospital and will undergo surgery on the affected wrist. Now, as expected, it turns out that he will not be available for the remaining matches of the World Cup. According to Sky Sports, if England win in the last eight, there is no chance of Henderson playing in this weekend’s quarter-final against Norway or any other matches.
After being taken to hospital, Henderson remained in Mexico City with England staff and is said to have not returned to Kansas City with the rest of the team.
He played just six minutes at the World Cup, coming on as a substitute during the group stage win over Panama.
After the final whistle, England manager Thomas Tuchel admitted in a worrying update that Henderson’s injury was “really bad”.
“Not good, not good, next up is the right defender who got a red card. Jordan just fell down with a wrist injury. It looks really bad,” he said.
“He injured his wrist and is in the hospital. It’s a pretty serious injury. He’s not fit for this night. I don’t know if he’ll have surgery or not.”
England will not be allowed to call up another player to replace Henderson, and injury substitutions will only be allowed before the opening game of the tournament.
Trevor Chalobah was drafted in as a replacement for Tino Livramento when the Newcastle defender was injured on the eve of the World Cup.
England hope to make Henderson proud by defeating Norway in the quarter-finals, scheduled for Saturday night.
If that happens, the Three Lions will qualify for the World Cup final for the second time since 1990. The most likely opponents would be Argentina or Colombia, whom England defeated on penalties in 2018.
