After the match, which will be remembered as one of the most classic World Cups in history, all of England’s players rushed onto the pitch to celebrate with their traveling supporters. Henderson, a substitute, was right in the middle of it when he tried to climb over the pitchside electronic bulletin board and fell.
It was immediately apparent that Henderson was seriously injured, and doctors rushed in to treat him.
The veteran midfielder was seen receiving oxygen before being taken away on a stretcher. As he left the pitch, many of his England team-mates stood around him, shielding him from the curious eyes of the world’s media.
BBC presenter Kerry Cates said: “He did fall into the billboard, which is what we think happened. He looked like he was breathing oxygen as he was carried off the pitch on a stretcher.”
England captain Kane was asked about the incident involving Henderson in his post-match interview and appeared to suggest he was not injured just before he was carried off on a stretcher.
“Yeah, Hendo fell over there,” Kane said. “I think he’s okay. There’s something wrong with his arm.”
Bellingham later said Henderson was part of England’s medical team and was being treated behind the scenes.
This unfortunate incident came after the Three Lions won a thrilling match that included five goals, two penalties, a red card and a ton of needles from start to finish.
Asked about his team’s performance, England manager Thomas Tuchel said: “I’m very proud. We needed everything. It was very difficult. Just when we thought we had the momentum, we went backwards. That’s the right mentality.”
“This team is serious. Even when the going gets tough, we never give up and never lose faith. We were just one step away.
“We have to live with this. This is the Aztecs, this is Mexico, this is a crazy game. We left everything behind, each of us. We have to live with this. We are going full speed ahead right now.”
