The team jumped over a billboard to get closer to the players, but upon returning to the pitch, Henderson lost his footing and fell awkwardly. Medical staff rushed to his aid and the Brentford player was eventually taken off the pitch on a stretcher.
According to The Athletic, Henderson will undergo surgery to correct the problem after sustaining the injury in the round of 16 match. Alarm bells were initially raised when manager Thomas Tuchel revealed after the match that Henderson had been hospitalized.
England manager Tuchel told reporters after the match: “It’s unfortunate that Jordan has injured his wrist.” That’s pretty serious. He is in the hospital. It doesn’t fit in with the rest of the night. I don’t understand the steps. ”
Meanwhile, Jude Bellingham, who scored twice for England in the win, said: “He (Henderson) is in a bit of trouble but our medical team has everything under control. It’s not good to go into too much detail because we don’t really know what’s going on, but everyone was there to support him.”
Despite this freak incident, England are unable to replace Henderson in their squad, meaning Tuchel will only have 25 players to choose from for his squad. Henderson has only made one appearance in the competition so far, coming on as a substitute in England’s final group game win over Panama.
However, England will be without Jarrell Quansah for the next game, who received a red card midway through the second half. That is unless FIFA decides to suspend red cards like USMNT star Folarin Balogun.
Commenting afterwards, Tuchel said: “First of all, I want to be clear that I don’t think it was a red card (to Balogun), but VAR was involved and obviously the three VAR members and the referee checked it and gave him a yellow card.” That’s why the decision was made. Who would overturn this decision and on what basis? And how far has this gone now? That’s just strange to me. We just want to be consistent in our decisions.”
“So what happens to our yellow card in the first minute against Declan Rice… We can argue endlessly now. I don’t think it’s a yellow card. Can we get this back? Can France get back the yellow card (against Paraguay) for (Michael) Oliseh that wasn’t a yellow card? Where will this end? I don’t know the rules. It’s wrong to ask. We’ll see what happens.”
The Three Lions will now head to Miami to take on Norway in the World Cup quarter-finals. Victory over Erling Haaland and others. England will advance to the semi-finals for the second time since 1990.
