Jarrell Quansah was sent off following a VAR review for a high challenge during England’s World Cup Round of 16 match against Mexico.

The young defender slipped in to win the ball in the opening minutes of the second half, but replays showed he had his foot high as he caught Jesus Gallardo, who was left stranded on the grass.

The Mexican bench was furious at the challenge from BBC commentator Alan Shearer, who said punches were thrown as the benches collided.

Referee Alireza Faghani allowed play to continue, but decided Quansah’s appeal merited a red card after being advised to review the appeal by VAR.

England were 2-1 up at this point, but managed to force extra time courtesy of Harry Kane shortly after Quansah retired from the penalty spot.

And despite Raul Jimenez converting his own spot-kick for a grandstand finale, England held firm and booked their place in the quarter-finals against Norway.

Quansah had been acting as a substitute at right-back, a position that had been a problem for Thomas Tuchel even before the start of the tournament after Tino Livramento was forced to withdraw from the squad due to injury.

Reece James missed England’s game against the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Round of 16 match against Mexico due to a hamstring injury.
