According to Sky Sports, the FA is “considering its options” regarding the revocation of the defender’s red card.

Quansah was sent off due to VAR intervention for a stud-up challenge on Jesus Gallardo. The referee initially overlooked the incident, but after looking at the pitchside monitor he made the decision to give him a straight red card.

With about 30 minutes left in the second half, England were reduced to 10 players. Manager Thomas Tuchel responded by reinstating England’s back four by introducing John Stones in place of Bukayo Saka and moving Ezri Konsa to right-back.

As a result of the red card, Quansah was disqualified from playing in Saturday’s quarter-final against Norway. This leaves England with a selection problem on the right side of defence.

Jed Spence also missed out on the win against Mexico, but could be back in the squad for the next game against England.

One player who will definitely not play against Norway is Jordan Henderson, who will undergo surgery after sustaining a serious wrist injury during the post-match celebrations.

It soon became clear that he was seriously injured and was carried off on a stretcher while being given oxygen, while a number of England players stood around him to protect him from the prying eyes of the media.

Henderson was rushed to a nearby hospital, but was subsequently ruled out for the remainder of the World Cup. He stayed in Mexico City with the England staff rather than return to Kansas City with the rest of the team.
