Manchester United are yet to make a signing since the summer transfer window opened, but Michael Carrick is one step closer following the departure of Andre Onana.

Manchester United have announced Andre Onana has returned to Trabzonspor on loan in a bid to boost Michael Carrick’s transfer plans. Onana, 30, fell out of favor at Old Trafford and spent last season in Turkey.
The goalkeeper made 40 appearances and helped Trabzonspor win the Turkish Cup and finish third in the Super Lig. Onana will spend the 2026-27 season at Papapara Park, with United announcing on Friday that his transfer had been agreed.
Trabzonspor will pay the Red Devils a loan fee worth £1.3 million and will cover Onana’s wages, which have increased due to United’s participation in the Champions League. However, this contract does not include a buyout option.
Onana’s departure leaves United with room to bring in a new goalkeeper. Carrick was faced with the challenge of bringing the former Ajax star back into the team if he stayed, while still keeping his wages within budget. The Red Devils have reportedly shortlisted Leeds goalkeeper Karl Darlow and Wolves’ Sam Johnstone as options.

United are keen to sign an experienced number two to support Senne Ramens, who had an excellent first season after joining from Royal Antwerp last summer. Altai Vaindir replaced him in the 2025-26 season, but United are also planning to drop him.
The Turkish international is said to have agreed personal terms with Besiktas, who were rumored to be moving to him in January. Bindir, 28, has made just 17 appearances in three seasons at Old Trafford and will be hoping to enjoy the same progression in his career as Onana once his move to Istanbul is completed.
“I’m very happy, believe me. I’m having the best time of my life,” the Cameroonian told Turkish outlet Yeniasil in December. “I can’t complain. I’m very happy to be here. Sometimes when I’m driving, a car cuts in front of me and says, ‘Hey, stop, I want a picture.’
