The manager of the team participating in this year’s FIFA World Cup announced his shocking resignation in a statement to fans.

Tunisia’s Hervé Renard has confirmed he will step down as the African nation’s coach after just 18 days in the job.

He took up the job after his predecessor, Sabri Ramouchi, was sacked following Tunisia’s disastrous 5-1 defeat to Sweden in their opening Group F game.

However, the 57-year-old Renard was unable to turn his team around, and they lost to Japan and the Netherlands and were eliminated from the tournament with zero points.

Leonard confirmed his departure in a post on Instagram.

He said: “Before I leave, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the FTF for allowing me to participate in the 2026 World Cup.

“It was an honor to wear the Tunisian colors and have this unforgettable experience.

“I wish this Tunisian team all the best for the future.

“I am confident that this country will continue to grow, excite the whole country, and write a glorious chapter in its history.

“Thank you to everyone who has accompanied me on this journey.

“I wish you all the best in your future endeavors. My journey is nearing its end.”

After Tunisia lost 4-0 to Japan in their second group match, Renard revealed that he had only signed a short-term contract with the team.

“If they offered me a real long-term project and asked me to stay in Tunisia, why wouldn’t I do it? I don’t see why I would turn it down.”

“I respect the person I have the conversation with and we can discuss it.

“I came for the World Cup, but now I have the freedom to choose the project that best suits my future.”
