Matheus Fernandes has spoken for the first time since his big-money move from West Ham United to Tottenham Hotspur. The midfielder joined from West Ham for a whopping £85m, which is currently registered as Spurs’ highest ever transfer fee.
After signing on the dotted line, Fernandes told the club’s official website: “I’m very excited about the next step. Spurs are a huge club and the head coach was a key factor in my decision to join.”
“When we spoke, it was very special. We all look at football the same way: to be on the pitch as a strong team to win every game, with fight and energy. I can’t wait for the games to start. I can’t wait to meet the fans, see everyone and give everything for the club.”
Meanwhile, head coach Roberto De Zerbi added: “I have long respected Matthäus because he combines the quality of the ball and the intensity and intelligence that are so important in the way we want to play.”
“Despite his age, he has already gained good experience in the Premier League and has shown quality and consistency at this level. Matthäus is comfortable under pressure, able to advance the ball, works hard for the team and has the courage to get things done in difficult moments. We believe this is the ideal environment for him to continue his development and we are excited to start working with him.”
Meanwhile, sporting director Johan Lange said: “We are delighted to welcome Matthäus to the club. He is a player with outstanding technical ability, intelligence and maturity who, despite his young age, has shown that he can perform consistently in high-pressure environments. We believe that this is the right place for Matthäus to take the next step in his career. He will work with our excellent coaching staff and an ambitious and talented group of players.”
“I’m sure our supporters will enjoy watching him play as he has the talent, mentality and work ethic to be a very important player for Tottenham Hotspur now and in the future.”
Fernandes and Tonali are two of several new players to join Tottenham this summer, with Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi already joining on free transfers from Liverpool and Bournemouth respectively. Meanwhile, Jan Paul van Hecke joined the North Londoners from Brighton at the start of the summer as part of a deal worth £52 million.
Tottenham are preparing for a huge campaign, having finished 17th in the last two seasons. Last time, the 2025 Europa League winners only confirmed safety on the final day at the expense of West Ham, where Fernandes had just signed.
