Manchester United are set to change their recruitment approach this summer as Elliott Anderson’s record move to Manchester City drives up prices across the market.
Manchester United are ready to change tack with summer signings, given the significantly higher price tag for talent in England.
The Red Devils are looking to build on the momentum built under Michael Carrick as they prepare for a return to Champions League football. They were among those interested in Elliott Anderson, who is currently approaching a £116m move to Manchester City.
They have prioritized signing a midfielder and are also eyeing Matheus Fernandes, but are stunned by the £80m price tag West Ham have offered him. Aston Villa value Morgan Rodgers at £130m, but he is not necessarily a target for United.
Adam Wharton is one of the players linked with a move to Manchester, but it is understood Crystal Palace are eyeing him as an £80m player.
With prices soaring, the Sun reports that Old Trafford officials are looking to bring in more junior talent, who may not necessarily be proven, but can be acquired at a fraction of the price.
An example of this coming to fruition was the signing of Aiden Haven from Arsenal in the January 2025 transfer window for £1.5 million. The 19-year-old started 12 games last season and often impressed when playing in the backline.
United will hope to be able to pull off a similar deal to strengthen their midfield options. The Red Devils opted to look outside the Premier League for their first signing of the summer, spending £35m on Atalanta midfielder Ederson, who had one year left on his contract.
Top clubs struggle to find value, similar to City’s £62.5 million signing of Antoine Semenyo from Bournemouth, but Anderson’s deal has pushed the market higher and clubs across England will be looking to maximize the price of their assets.
United are already set to have Casemiro leave the club when his contract expires. Manuel Ugarte was expected to follow him, but an injury could end any hopes of a summer move.
